Best Fruit for a Patriotic Fruit Salad
This fruit salad recipe is barely a recipe at all. It's more like a friendly reminder of the fun, seasonal fruits that are available in the colors of the American flag.
Since I know from experience that it's hard to remember off the top of my head what all the options are for each color, here's a list of what works well and gives you that nice pop of color you're after.
White Fruit 🍐
- Diced, peeled pears- that's what you see in the photos, and I saved some time by using canned pears (highly recommend!)
- Apples - peeled apple chunks will give you the white color you're looking for
- Canary melons - they have a bright yellow rind, but the flesh is white and perfect for our patriotic theme.
- White peaches - another one you'll have to peel, but so sweet and juicy it's worth it!
Red Fruit 🍓
- Fresh berries, like strawberries or raspberries
- Juicy watermelon - this is a fun one to cut into thick slices and cut with a small star cookie cutter
- dark red cherries, pitted
- Pomegranate seeds
Blue Fruit 🫐
- Fresh blueberries
- Blackberries
- Plums, with their peel on
- Black currants (if you're lucky enough to get those)
- Black or red grapes - which actually look blue enough depending on the other fruits you'll be using.

Tools You Might Need
Here's where you can get the clear cups with lids. I also included a link to one of my favorite company's small star cookie cutters (Fox Run), in case you want to go the extra mile and cut some of your fruit into little star shapes.

It could not be easier to make these fun fruit salad cups, even on a hot summer day.

Step 1. Wash and cut up your favorite red, white, and blue fruit. Bite sized pieces are easiest to eat.

Step 2. In clear cups, arrange the fruit in layers. Fill the cups all the way to the top, to prevent the fruit layers from shifting around.

Step 3. If you're making this in advance, put white fruit on top (like the tall cup in the back) to prevent the other colors from bleeding into the white section.

Bonus Tip 👇
Note: to prevent white fruit from browning, toss with a little citrus juice. Lemon juice, lime juice, or orange juice will all work. It depends on what flavor combo you like.
How to Make Ahead, Store, and Serve
These fruit cups can be made a day in advance and stored in the fridge. Make sure they have tight fitting lids on them so the fruit won't dry out.
If you are transporting them to a party, secure them so they won't tip over in transit and destroy your beautiful red, white, and blue stripes. The clear cups with lids (check those Amazon links above) will rest nicely in muffin tins so you can get to your destination without worries.
