Santa Rice Ball Bento

A really cute way to serve leftover chicken teriyaki and rice - from beneficial-bento.com

So how do you make leftover stir fry and rice into something worth eating again for lunch? Shape that rice into a santa rice ball, and add a few cheese snowflakes!

Aw, look at that cute little guy! I dare anyone to not smile upon opening their lunch box and seeing that. I know, I know - he's just too cute to eat, but he's also delicious too. Sticky rice, cheese, carrot, ham... he's too good NOT to eat I say ( and maybe I should stop calling it "he").

What's in This Lunch:

  • stir fry chicken with carrot, peppers, sesame seeds, and stir fry sauce
  • Monterrey Jack cheese for the beard, hat trim, and snowflakes
  • nori for the eyes and mouth
  • deli turkey breast for the cheeks
  • a slice of baby carrot for the nose
  • deli pastrami for the hat

I learned how to shape rice balls from watching the  "Obento for Kids" YouTube channel. I used plastic wrap to easily shape the rice, and then after I added the face details I used the plastic wrap again to press it down and smooth it all out. Here's one of her videos so you can see better how she shapes rice balls:

Products I Used:

I used one of these snowflake fondant cutters to cut the cheese. I love the plunger style cutters the best, especially for cheese because the plunger pushes the cheese out  and it rarely breaks.

I used the mouth from the panda nori punch to cut out Santa's smile, and I used a regular old hole punch for the eyes.

I used  a couple of circle cutters for his cheeks, ball on his hat,  and to cut out the round shape around the cheese beard that outlines his face.

Here's where you can buy these items:
